Time: 15:00 – 16:30 (SA time)
Platform: Zoom

Whenever people live, work or socialise together conflict can occur. This is because we are inter-dependent: we rely on others to help us meet our needs or at least not to do anything that might negatively impact on them. If not managed well, it can be extremely costly for individuals, organisations and society at large. Yet most of us are not equipped to deal with conflict effectively for various reasons, the most important being our negative perception of conflict. This causes us to fall into fight or flight behaviours when conflict arises. However, conflict can have many positive spin-offs provided
(a) we changed the way we think about it from seeing it as a threat to viewing as an opportunity;
(b) we develop strategic agility, i.e., treat each conflict as unique and adopt an approach that is appropriate to the situation; and (c) acquire some of the skills needed for turning conflict opportunities into positive outcomes.

Not only individuals but also entire organisations can acquire this ‘conflict wisdom’ but this requires more than just training staff on how to manage conflict more effectively. It is a process that needs to be guided from the top to create a culture and internal systems that are conducive to conflicts being made visible and engaged with as early as possible. The evidence shows that conflict positive organisations attract, retain and motivate people, and generally outperform those that are not able to engage wit conflict constructively. There is also evidence to suggest that investing in organisational conflict wisdom can have benefits outside the organisation as well as employees ‘export’ their conflict attitudes and skills into their immediate social circles and even beyond.
